Stampede Style - Western Wear Fashion 2019
Western wear - denim jeans, plaid shirts, cowboy boots, and hats. This look hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years, but sometime around 1950 practical western wear met mainstream fashion and created new styles.
The Calgary Stampede is known internationally as a huge event over 10 days that embraces our western heritage, culture and spirit. It includes rodeos, exhibitions, dancing, partying, pancake breakfasts, music and plenty of other fun events. Stampede is fun and reaches out into all neighbouring communities. Honestly, we think all the “howdy, how are you?” and “yee-haw this is fun” sentiments are all about the smiles, laughter and community spirit. We live in cowboy country and know what the real cowboys and cowgirls are wearing when they are working on the ranch.
We thought this might be a great opportunity to share our thoughts on what to wear. It doesn’t take too much planning to pull together an awesome look. Denim anything and everything is the best start to any outfit. You can’t go wrong with a pair of denim pants, a skirt, a shirt or a jacket. Chances are you might even already have this in your closet and just need to update a little with a new jacket, top or footwear.
Jeans - If you’re looking for denim try to find something you will wear again. Any style of denim is good and we really like the fit of Mavi and AG denim. Boot-cut and flare are a classic style of denim pants since they can be worn with the pant-leg outside the cowboy boots. Don’t limit denim to one style. A skinny-leg style fits easily inside a tall boot or can be worn with it touching the top of a short boot. Boyfriend styles look really great with a short boot too.
Boots - Gotta love a gorgeous cowboy boot. Our Old Gringo are extraordinarily well made and comfortable. These boots are a timeless, forever boot that can be worn year-after-year. They look lovely styled with all denim and can take almost any dress or skirt and give it an instant western flavour. It’s okay to say no to cowboy boots and wear a leather sandal or Blundstone boot.
Jackets - Either denim or leather jackets can give a western style vibe. Long cardigans also work well. Just add a scarf or a classic piece of jewelry to amp up the look.
If wearing a leather jacket find one that can be worn for several seasons. One of our favourite is the gorgeous Bano Ee Mee leather jacket. These jackets are ethically produced and the leather is a by-product of the food industry. Bano eeMee is a small socially conscious business in Toronto that creates fair-work opportunities in a small community in Pakistan where Canadian designer and founder, Alemm Arif, is from. The sale of a Bano eeMee jacket translates into fair paid work. When one jacket is made two artisans are paid for three days of work.
Skirts, dresses and belts - All lengths of dresses and skirts are good. Add a cowboy boot or sandal And consider wearing a belt. Belts are on-trend and can be coordinated to give an up-to-date style. Brave Leather belts come in many styles and colours and are made in Canada. Brave Leather belts are fashionable and made to last so you won’t need to buy a new belt every year.
Shirts - Finding and wearing the right shirt is important. Our summer weather can be unpredictable and there are often huge fluctuations in temperature and precipitation. Many lightweight button-up shirts can work with denim and the natural fibres - such as cotton, silk and linen are comfortable. Sleeveless tops can always be layered with a sweater or jacket for the cooler weather. The bohemian vibes of Johnny Was makes it perfect for all Stampede events and beyond.
Have fun styling a summer look. We’re a proud, locally owned small business and believe it’s cool to go all out or just add a touch of yahoo! 🤠
