Creating a Capsule Wardrobe

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a smaller, more select wardrobe including jackets, tops, bottoms, dresses, skirts, footwear, and jewelry. There are at least a total of 40 garments that can easily be mixed and matched to give you many styling options.

Why Build a Capsule Wardrobe?

Is it is worth investing your time and energy to organize a wardrobe for each season? Yes, there are many reasons why you might like to have a capsule wardrobe:

Saves time - You don’t waste your time weeding through clothes that you don’t really like, are no longer wearable, or don’t fit. You should feel and look great. Who wants to waste time trying on multiple outfits every day to find something that looks and feels good.

Deciding what to wear is easier - Own clothes you look and feel great in. When you only have your favourite clothes to choose from, it makes deciding what to wear really easy!

Boosts confidence - A capsule wardrobe makes it easier to embrace your style preferences and what you look and feel best in.

You can focus more on quality - When you have a carefully selected wardrobe, you can focus on having quality pieces to wear.

Packing for travel is easier - You don’t have to overthink what coordinates because everything mixes and matches so well.

Before You Begin

We would like to share our thoughts and recommendations regarding how you can begin to build your very own capsule wardrobe.

Declutter: Go through your closet and try on everything. If an item is out-of-date, damaged or doesn’t fit consider consignment, donation or repurposing.

Assess: Be honest about your lifestyle and what you need from a wardrobe. Your lifestyle might be active and casual so high heels may not be for you.

1. Select a Base Colour - First, you’ll need to decide what colour you wish to use as your base colour. Black and navy are the two most commonly seen colours in capsule wardrobes.  Black is an all-around great base colour to use because it goes with so many other colours. If you don’t like black or navy you can use a shade of brown as your base colour.

2. Select Your Neutral-Colour Coordinating Essentials - Essentials are tops and bottoms that are solid colours, like black, white, gray, chambray and beige. Chambray is a type of material that looks like denim but is soft. It comes in light blue, medium blue or dark blue shades. Some of this seasons yellows and pinks are neutral and can really give you styling options. Classic pieces never go out of style.  A white button-up shirt, grey short sleeve tee, beige sweater, white long sleeve tee, black skirt, are all examples essential pieces. Keep in mind navy and black sometimes look awkward when worn together. A navy top with a black pant does not coordinate well but the same colour top and pant look great together. Some of this seasons yellows and pinks are neutral and can really give you styling options

3. Pick a colour or pattern - We think this is a fun way to add a few seasonal pieces. Use colour without limiting your style options. Consider a scarf or a bold colour of shoe. A Johnny Was scarf is a statement piece you can wear for many years. Other accessories such as earrings, bracelets, and purses can complete the look.

The key to a functional closet is to make sure everything coordinates together.

4. Footwear - We think it’s best to have wearable footwear that offers comfort but is fashionable. A pair of sneakers is on-trend and looks great with pants, skirts and dresses. It’s also great to have dressier footwear for a special evening out.

We feel it’s important to ask questions through the process so you’ll have a wardrobe you love wearing and that can be adapted from one season to the next. These questions are:

✔ Does it go with 3 other items in your capsule?

✔️ How many outfits can you create with this item?

✔️ Does it fit with your personal style?

✔️ Does the fit and fabric work for you?

✔️ Will this work with your lifestyle?

We are happy to meet with you to give you a personalized shopping experience when you are putting together your capsule wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobes allows you to buy better quality fabrics that you can wear for several years. This is called slow fashion and we talked about it in one of our previous blog - “Sustainable Fashion”.
